Entente Cordiale

Photographing music events is difficult. Not just in logistical terms, such as knowing where to be (or not), and what’s going to happen next - that’s par for the course on any photography job.

With an album launch gig, all parties involved are quite nervous. There’s an edge to the anticipation, the excitement at the prospect of witnessing what’s about to be played out on stage over the next couple of hours (and Alban Claret & Nigel Price, two of the most accomplished jazz guitarists in London, can seriously play).

There could hardly be a more suitable title for this collaboration than ‘Entente Cordiale’ - ‘a friendly understanding or informal alliance between two states or factions.’ An ‘alliance’ may sound too political for this partnership, but the understanding between the two is very apparent. The call-and-response play is so fluid, and they handle incredibly complex techniques and melodies with such competence as to make it seem effortless.

The trick to covering this is to know when I’ve captured the moments of emotional resonance that punctuate all the mesmerisingly good technical ability. The occasional smile or nod of appreciation between the pair is just as important as when they appear lost in concentration, or deep in a wistful blues. It always helps to be supported by such incredible players as Mirko Scarcia on double bass, who poured his heart and soul into every riff, and the effortlessly cool Matt Fishwick on drums, reminiscent of the late Charlie Watts as he breezed through staggeringly impressive drum solos. The whole event was a delight.
